On the Attack: Sir Nicholas Bacon on his way to 29

A half-century from man of the match Chris Read paved the way for success in a good-natured encounter at Hales Green.

In his first game for three years, Sir Nicholas wielded his vintage Gray-Nicolls steel spring bat to good effect in an opening stand of 104 with Read, a former H&L youth player now successfully plying his trade at EAPL level with Horsford.

Cutting edge: Chris Read cuts the ball square for four

When Sir Nicholas departed for an attractive 29, caught by Jon Andrews off the bowling of Matt Buckingham, Read continued to show his style, posting a fine 60 before being caught by Tom WiIkins off a Buckingham delivery. Jack Crichton (21), Archie Innes (15), Milton Lindsay (21 no) and Tom Bacon (21 no) maintained a brisk tempo as the scoreboard rattled towards the 200 mark.

President’s XI

Veteran Jon Andrews led the reply for chairman Pete Dye’s XI with a decent 39 before skying an Innes delivery to mid-on where Milton Lindsay took a well-judged steepling catch. The potentially dangerous Mark Stewart fell for 15, contriving to edge a flatter delivery from the wily Joe Perry on to his stumps. Auldwyn Lindsay (14) and Matt Buckingham (13) were the other double-figure contributors as the Chairman’s XI reply ran out of steam against an eight-man bowling attack.

Following the game, Sir Nicholas stayed on to present awards and certificates to our deserving youth section. Congratulations to all our youth team players, coaches and parents for all the effort you’ve put in this season. See you in 2017!
